The Death of the Raffle

As you may have noticed, the raffle is no more.  Sad, ’cause some truly kick-ass prizes were donated.  But the stumbling point was the fact that while the production and fiscal sponsor are located in NY, I am not a NYS resident.  The state that I live in does not allow online gambling, and a raffle counts as online gambling.  So – the raffle has been dismantled.  Incredibly frustrating, but who wants to go to jail?

ARGHHH!

So…I spent a pleasant hour yesterday, volunteering and helping out my fiscal sponsor, Fractured Atlas, prepare for their benefit.  I also stuffed about 200 totebags with “minted” (that is, with mints stuck on them) postcards into the gift totebags they were giving out.  The postcards were for the raffle – the prizes, where to buy, etc.  When I got to work, I sent out an e-mail to my screenwriters’ lab, telling them about the raffle and how to buy tickets.

So I check my e-mail today and see that one of my labmates has attempted to buy tickets and ran into problems.  So I try to buy tickets, and lo and behold – paypal is busted.  Again.

Since this is the second time that it’s happened, and I don’t want to be worrying about it all the time, I’m giving google checkout a whirl – it looks like it might work out better, plus they have a promotion running through the end of this year that waives fees for sellers on credit card transactions.  While I know that paypal seems to be the more popular thing right now, I don’t want to be worrying about how many potential ticket-buyers are giving up ’cause paypal broke down again.  So – the raffle is on hold (hopefully only until the end of the day) until the problem is fixed.

I sent paypal a question sometime last week, asking about the problem, which had occurred before, and they never responded.  If google at least replies to me, forget how many days it takes, they’ll be ahead of paypal, in my book.

A new shooting space!

Well – after having a mini-production meeting last night (me, the director, the DP and the production designer), it looks like we’ll be shooting in a new space – Dara the DP offered to let us use her apartment for the shoot – a spacious, one-bedroom apartment.  It will be much more accomodating of the cast and crew members (amazing how, even for a short film, the cast and crew members seem to pile up).  It also has an elevator, which will be a bit easier on folks than the fifth floor walk up, though the guys who were going to let us use the fifth floor walk up were awfully nice…maybe I can talk them into being PA’s:-)

It also looks like we may actually be shooting on FILM rather than DV…more to come on that development.  If anyone who’s done both is reading this, feel free to comment.

Let the raffle begin!

Thanks to my webmaster (excuse me, webmistress, though that sounds just a bit odd – like the stuff that seems to pop up more and more in the divorce courts of the 21st Century) the brilliant Tricia Gilbert, my raffle is now up and running!  Please visit the raffle page to see the seven fabulous prizes that were generously donated.  Tickets are one for $5 or three for $10.

We have production dates!

So – I haven’t really been keeping people posted on the trials and tribulations of scheduling.  If I tear out half as much hair during the shoot as I have trying to coordinate various people’s schedules, I will be one happy camper.

The dates of production are going to be the second and third weekends of January – early enough that no theatre shows will have started up, and early enough that the school term will just be starting for one of my actors.  I’m also hoping that some local restaurant will be more willing to give me a discount on production foodstuffs (i.e., the craft services table) since it will be the dead post-holiday season (dead in terms of catering, I mean).

So…I’m keeping my fingers crossed and hoping that this works out.
